Duncan Speakman

He is the new resident artist at timelab and also new resident of Ghent (he is moving to Ghent this spring). Duncan’s work explores how we use sound to navigate social and physical environments. His recent work has focused on headphone based experiences that draw on cinematic styles and create participatory performances in public spaces (‘subtlemobs’)

There is an underlying agenda to explore how mobile technology can be 'hacked' to create more engagement with the user's immediate environment (as opposed to the ability to connect to remote locations/people, which in turn creates an isolating effect in a shared social space.)

In this presentation he will showcase his approach to using mobile technologies in public space. From embedded computing platforms and portable radio transmitters, to micro video projectors and mass participation soundwalks/subtlemobs, he constantly rethinks the technologies in our pockets to help us connect with the people and places surrounding us.

mini-cnc

http://timelab.org/miniCNC

http://www.repairablemachines.com/doc.html

Concept: “Shiptree”

“ the shape of a tree is the history of the forces which were acting on it as it grew”
http://www.bath.ac.uk/mech-eng/biomimetics/about/smart.html

Consider the potential of all of earth’s biota.
what if we could ask trees to go with us into space, biomimicry all survival strategies
vital for space travel. Imagine the roles which could be played by ants, spiders, algae,
squids , cetaceans and other fauna & flora. Liberate the possibilities of cohabitation
within large natural space capable biospheres. Let us all engage in the creation and
quantum collapse of future possibilities. The combined consciousness energy emanating
from a myriad of entitys can achieve miracles. Through co-evolution, natural patience,
harmonious dedication and biological bravery life can boldly go and explore the cosmos.

Angelo Vermeulen

will talk about ‘Space Ecologies’, an artistic research platform initiated in 2009. It is a critical and artistic inquiry into the future of mankind in outer space, with a special focus on the potential roles of ecology. Vermeulen works together with the MELiSSA research team of ESA, and is a member of ESA’s upcoming Arts & Science Topical Team. Last year he showed a first art work inspired by MELiSSA’s microbiological research, co-created with sociologist Tine Holvoet. During his talk he will focus on two upcoming art projects inspired by the concept of ‘terraforming’. The first is a collaboration with the Compostmeesters in Willebroek, the second a community project on the Merapi volcano in Yogyakarta, in collaboration with the artist collective House of Natural Fiber (HONF). He will conclude his presentation with a brief report on an astrobiology field trip in the Sahara desert organized by ESA and NASA past February.

Juliana Borinski (in residentie) and Marie-Laure Delaby (participant
summercamp Electrified 2010) will present their work.

Juliana Borinski

The German/Brazilian artist Juliana Borinski is artist in residence at
timelab till the end of januari. The work of Juliana starts from a total
fascination for film in its purest form. The work of scientist Joseph
Plateau, active in Ghent in the first half of the 19th century, forms a
great inspiration for Juliana. Plateau discovered the after-effect of the
image on the eye and was therefore responsible for a part of the basis of
the later cinematography. Also other scientific research by Plateau, his
work around surface tension, is at the basis of Juliana's residency at
timelab. We are collaborating with the Science Museum of the Ghent
University which hosts an archive around Joseph Plateau.
During her residency, Juliana want to unite old and new techniques to work
around abstract material to penetrate deep into the soul of film. Also she
will experiment with soap bubbles in the tradition of Plateau but with the
aim to create artworks.

Marie-Laure Delaby

Marie-Laure Delaby works in Brussels (imal) and lives in Ghent. As an artist
she works with painting, digital media, electronics and light. By assembling
things together she creates hybrid works which intend to question the
reality of space, image and experience. Taking inspiration from urban spaces
encountered in daily life, she mostly focuses on non-places, disconnected
environments and their parallel existences.
Marie-Laure was one of the twelve participating artists in timelab's annual
summercamp. With phosphorescent paint, LDR sensors, Arduino and it's
waveshield, she created a painting in a forgotten space in Ghent. Through
the use of torches you could discover former structures in the building, a
sort of ghost architecture. For the sound she collaborated with Jari
Suominen, the Finnish musician and sound artists who was also part of
Summercamp Electrified 2010. In the context of this presentation, we invite
Marie-Laure to make a new phosphorescent painting at the new location of
timelab. The work will be revealed at the presentation and will be part of
the timelab Collection.

TANTAMOUNT / LABEL.07 GHENT - KANAZAWA

LABEL is a monthly event organized by students of  the 'Multimedia Design'
program (K.A.S.K. Ghent).
Two students curate the event and develop an interesting presentation
context for
visual and live art of their fellow students and professional artists.
LABEL.07 is the initiative
of Dries Douibi and Annelien Vermeir in cooperation with the Japanese
curator Masahiro Saito.

'TANTAMOUNT / LABEL.07 GHENT - KANAZAWA' is an exhibition concept in which
the curators investigate the boundaries and the challenge of the exhibition
format.
The show takes place simultaneously on two radically different locations,
KAPO (Kanazawa Art Port) - Kanazawa (Japan) and timelab - Ghent (Belgium).
The Japanese artwork, sent by airmail from japan, will be on view in timelab
(Ghent),
together with a representation of the original Belgian work which will be
physically present in KAPO (Japan).
At the same time the Belgian work will be on view in KAPO (Japan)
in relation with the virtual representation of the original Japanese works.
The project's intension lies in creating one exhibition/event that reflects
on a virtual level.

The exhibition will be open for public from 16/12/2010 until 24/12/2010
(11AM - 5PM)
Closed on monday 20/12/2010 and tuesday 21/12/2010.

Deze maand hebben we volgende presentaties:

Troy Rogers - 'Stemmetje' project

Presentation of work in progress on a singing, speaking robot.

There exists a long and rich tradition of mechanical 'talking machines', one that has been extended by digital speech synthesis and more recently by robotic speaking machines.  Drawing on his own experiences with Expressive Machines Muscial Instruments (EMMI) in the US and the expertise of Dr. Godfried Willem Raes and the Logos Foundation in Gent, Rogers is developing a cheap, open-source, portable, virtuosic robot capable of producing a wide range of vocal utterances.  He will present his work to date on the project, carried out while he is in residence at the Logos Foundation as a Fulbright Research Scholar in 2009-10 .

#.................//...............?/

Thomas Laureyssens - #plant
